Ring Education: Metal Education - Silver

  • Color: Shiny white metal, often used for less expensive jewelry.
  • Alloys: Sterling silver is the standard for jewelry and is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper, however, tarnish free silver alloys are becoming more popular. These are commonly 92.5% - 94.5% silver and use less copper in their alloys, instead utilizing other precious metals such as palladium along with elements such as zinc, silicon, indium, or sulphur.

Pros: More affordable than gold or platinum, beautiful luster, easy to work with,
tarnish resistant alloys provide an affordable way to make jewelry that doesn’t
tarnish as easily as traditional sterling silver.

Cons: Tarnishes over time, substantially softer than gold or platinum leading to
much shorter lifespans for jewelry that is worn regularly when compared with
platinum or gold jewelry.
